ABE Level I

In 2005, SBCS added Adult Basic Education to the mix of programs all aimed at assisting participants access the employment market. It became evident that graduates of New Beginnings and HOPEworks had few prospects for employment if they lacked basic literacy, no matter how far they had come in the employment preparation programs. For this reason, SBCS proposed the introduction of ABE Level I in their programs and were successful in securing funds from the Department of Education to offer this basic literacy and numeracy program.

The program offers an alternative learning environment for individuals who have struggled with literacy and have been unable to attend the traditional ABE programs offered at the community college level.

The SBCS program has been recognized for its contributions to the literacy movement in the province, having received a Council of the Federation Literacy Award in 2007.Two of the program’s graduates have been recipient of the Peter Gzowski Learner Achievement Awards as well.

Students can self refer, or can be referred by a counsellor or other professional. Intake is ongoing throughout the year, with a continuous enrolment of 12 students at all times.
