Stella Burry Community Services

Rawlins Cross Phase I & II

In 2003, the organization purchased the W.J. Murphy property on Rawlins Cross in downtown St.John’s. SBCS had grown substantially as an organization and was in need of additional office space. The site also offered a main floor retail space which was to become strategic for later growth in employment programming. A total of $1.3 million was awarded from the SCPI program to enable the redevelopment of the Murphy property which includes six apartment homes on the upper floors.

In 2005, SBCS acquired the former O’Mara-Martin building which was situated diagonally across from the Murphy property on Rawlins Cross. Redevelopment of this site began in 2008 using Rental RAP funds, as well as funds available through the Affordable Housing Initiative (Newfoundland & Labrador Housing) and the federal Homelessness Partnership Strategy, to create 18 apartments at the site.

Both buildings have been designed to recreate the appearance of the structures originally erected on these sites in the late 1800s. Newfoundlanders are enormously proud of the remarkable built heritage of their capital city and these two buildings, located in the heart of the Historic District are entirely in sympathy with their surroundings.
