Carew Lodge

The acquisition of Carew Lodge in 1999 launched the beginnings of the SBCS affordable housing development programs. Formerly a derelict boarding house in the city’s center, Carew Lodge underwent major renovations which were completed in 2001. When it was re-opened, the ‘new’ Carew Lodge offered 12 self-contained units with a shared kitchen on each floor. The ground floor includes a community space for meetings, activities and supportive services. Additionally, the ground floor contains two transitional housing units which are available to men or women returning to the community under supervised parole. These units have enhanced security and the ability to have staffing on site 24-hours per day if the parolee requires that level of support.  A community development worker provides tenants and other clients with assistance regarding education and employment needs and advocacy on matters relating to income support, assistance with cooking, budgeting and grocery shopping and in obtaining furniture and other household items.
