Safe, secure accommodation is essential to recovery and well being and is a necessity for one’s stability. The SBCS housing program came about when staff began to assist program participants secure appropriate housing in the community when they were ready to leave Emmanuel House.
In the mid-1980s, apartments available through the City of St. John’s were leased, marking the beginnings of a partnership that today encompasses 24 City-owned properties which are now managed by SBCS. Demand for affordable housing has continued to exceed supply, prompting SBCS to become more active in property development. Housing development is now a major focus within the organization.
Today, the real estate holdings of SBCS include 17 buildings, which provide 67 rental units, 24 units managed by SBCS and approximately 15,000 square feet of leased space.
