Emmanuel House
Emmanuel House, a heritage home located in downtown St. Johns, began as an outreach program of the United Church of Canada in 1945. Its purpose then was to provide residence for young women moving into the city to attend school and seek employment.
Today, Emmanuel House provides counselling and support to adults with social and emotional problems, helping them to focus on developing skills that will enable them to lead productive lives in the community. Residents of Emmanuel House are men and women who have experienced a variety of problems in their lives such as physical, sexual and emotional abuse, psychiatric difficulties, conflict with the law, alcohol and substance abuse, family violence or breakdown, and the lack of opportunity for education or employment preparation. The majority of residents are between the ages of 18-30.
Referrals to Emmanuel House can be made by health care providers, family counselling agencies, Correctional Services of Canada, the Department of Human Resources and Employment or family and friends of individuals needing support. Self-referrals are also accepted. Since 1979, more than 1500 individuals have participated in the Emmanuel House Residential Program.
