Awards & Recognition

Joce and RonThe organization, as well as Executive Director Jocelyn Greene, have been recognized many times both locally and nationally for innovative programming that affirms everyone’s rights to a home and to meaningful work. Just a few of these awards include:

  • 1996 - Jocelyn Greene was awarded the YMCA Canada Peace Medal for her work in the development of services in her community
  • 2001 – Nomination for a national Affordable Housing Innovations Award by Canada Mortgage and Housing in the Process and Management Category for the redevelopment of Carew Lodge.
  • 2005 - Jocelyn Greene received the Canadian Association of Social Workers’ Distinguished Service Award to acknowledge her significant contribution to the profession.
  • 2007 – Executive Director Jocelyn Greene was recognized with a Distinguished Alumni Award for Outstanding Community Service from Memorial University.
  • 2008 – The City of St. John’s Heritage Advisory Committee recognized SBCS in a public ceremony for the manner in which SBCS developments were designed and constructed to restore and reinstate buildings in the Heritage District of the city,
  • 2009 – Canadian Urban Institute conferred the Universal City Award. This award recognizes organizations that celebrate human diversity; remove barriers to the participation of people in the economic, cultural and political life of the cities and which undertake initiatives that are dedicated to the advancement of human rights and to the principles of pluralism and citizenship.
  • 2010 - Jocelyn Greene, Executive Director, received the Graham Emslie Award from the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association. This award is granted to a nominee who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution in the field of housing and community development.
  • 2010 - Stella Burry Community Services received the Southcott Award from the Newfoundland Historic Trust for Rawlins Cross Phase I & II redevelopment.  The Southcott Award program recognizes excellence in the preservation of the architectural heritage of Newfoundland & Labrador.
