Who we are
Stella Burry Community Services is a leading social services agency in St. John's, Newfoundland providing programs for adults and youth who have experienced personal or family breakdown brought about by mental health issues, addictions, abuse, illiteracy and the lack of education as well as poverty. They come looking for understanding, support and most of all, hope….hope that they can learn to live successfully with others despite their own mental health challenges, hope that they can overcome their addiction to drugs or alcohol; hope that they can afford to live in a decent, safe place; hope that they can feed and nurture their children; and hope that they can find opportunities that will allow them to feel valued and to make a contribution to their community.
Today, SBCS provides programs and services that address three essential needs:
Real Help...Counselling and support for those who are attempting to return to the community following periods of incarceration, hospitalization or other marginalization.
Real Homes ...Affordable housing development and programs that ensure security and stability as well as eviction prevention
Real Work...Training and Skill development, literacy education and employment through SBCS-run businesses that link participants to employment opportunities that offer long term career potential.
